What Causes Breast Enlargement in Men?

You probably have seen or noticed enlarged breasts in men. This condition is not too common, but it exists and goes by the name gynecomastia. This condition is characterized by breast enlargement in men, and males with this condition develop breasts that are similar to those of women, made up of a firm spongy tissue. However, gynecomastia is separate from fatty deposits in the chest of some men that can develop as an obesity symptom.

There are a number of factors that cause gynecomastia or breast enlargement in men. Here are some primary examples:

  • Hormone imbalance – Your hormones regulate your breast growth and development, regardless if you are a man or a woman. Typically, men maintain higher levels of male hormone testosterone and low levels of female hormone estrogen. Estrogen is one of the hormones in breast growth, so you usually don’t see enlarged breasts in men. These hormones become off-balance in the cause of gynecomastia patients. Once this hormone imbalance is diagnosed as the reason behind gynecomastia, its underlying reason should be medically evaluated in order to rule out the existence of a far serious health condition.
  • Klinefelter’s syndrome – This is a genetic disorder that affects your sex chromosomes. A normal male has one female X and one male Y chromosome, for the XY genotype. A Klinefelter’s syndrome patient has one or more extra copies of the female X chromosome and may have the genotype XXY, XXXY, or XXXXY. He has a much higher level of circulating estrogen in his body and lower levels of testosterone because of inadequate testes development. This ultimately results in gynecomastia. Only about eight percent of gynecomastia, though, is reported to be caused by this disorder.
  • Marijuana – Using this can either cause or contribute to the occurrence of gynecomastia. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, marijuana’s active ingredient, has a number of consequences on your brain and body. For instance, it affects your circulating hormone levels and your reproductive system.

If you are a regular marijuana user, you may develop gynecomastia over time because THC promotes the release of prolactin, a hormone, from your pituitary gland. Prolactin is a signal for breast growth, along with milk production, and sustained high levels of prolactin due to regular THC exposure eventually causes gynecomastia in some males. About 10 to 25 percent of reported cases of gynecomastia is reported to be caused by marijuana as well as other drugs.

But there is a potentially effective way to lose “man boobs” fast, and this is through supplementation. Supplements such as Gynexin can help facilitate male breast reduction, and you can reap benefits over a period of time. It is best to talk to your health care provider if you are keen on exploring this remedy against gynecomastia.
