Refresher on Gynecomastia or Male Breast Enlargement

Man boobs or abnormally enlarged male breasts are a fact of life for a number of men worldwide today. If you are part of the growing statistics, learn more about this condition and how to properly combat it.

The technical term for this condition is gynecomastia, which is mainly characterized by the enlargement of the gland tissue of male breasts. While it occurs more commonly among male infants and those in puberty, it can also take place among middle-aged or more elderly ones. The real condition of gynecomastia results from breast tissue or glandular growth, and it is behind most of the breast evaluations done on men today.

Common Causes of Enlarged Male Breasts

Here are some of the common factors behind gynecomastia:

  1. Hormonal imbalance – In gynecomastia, there occurs a boost of estrogen levels in men, causing an imbalance between testosterone and estrogen. Estrogen is a female hormone, and the condition can occur normally and disappear on its own among infant or pubertal boys. Sometimes, the change in hormone levels in men can cause the male breast condition, and it can typically disappear within months to two years.
  2. Liver cirrhosis – This medical condition can alter your normal hormone metabolism.
  3. Male sex organ disorders – These disorders, which can be genetic such as Klinefelter’s syndrome, can cause a reduction in the production of testosterone.
  4. Other medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, chronic renal failure, and certain cancers
  5. Re-feeding and malnutrition
  6. Aging

Other Considerations

There are other symptoms of gynecomastia apart from enlargement of breasts, including sensitivity and tenderness. But there usually should be no severe pain present. Know that gynecomastia is separate from breast cancer in men, which has its own set of symptoms. Note, too, that gynecomastia may sometimes be involved in this type of cancer.

While embarrassing or causing social discomfort, gynecomastia is generally not harmful. But you may also seek male breast reduction primarily due to the psychological effects, such as feelings of embarrassment. Consult your health care provider for a proper diagnosis and the appropriate treatment. You may also ask about the use of a high-quality gynecomastia supplement.
